In November of 2014 the ASTM F16 committee on fasteners approved the development of a new standard for zinc-flake coating systems. This new standard, F3393, was originally approved and published in July of 2020. An update to F3393 was approved in February 2024 and published in May 2024. F3393 is a consolidation and replacement of three standards for commercially available zinc-flake coating systems: F1136/F1136M, F2833, and F3019/3019M. The new standard for zinc-flake coating systems combines the classification, performance, and basic requirements of the three original standards. The new standard also includes requirements for zinc-flake coating systems which are permitted by Specification F3125/F3125M for use with 150 ksi / 1040 MPa high strength structural bolts and assemblies. The original three standards for zinc-flake coating systems are referenced in the Appendix of the new standard.
At the May 2024 meeting of the F16.03 subcommittee it was decided to ballot withdrawal of the three original standards prior to the Fall 2024 meeting. The withdrawal of these three standards will ensure alignment with F3125/F3125M and help to eliminate confusion in the industry as to which standard should be used moving forward. References to the withdrawn standards will be maintained on the ASTM website and a link will direct users to the replacement standard. The rationale for withdrawal will also be provided.
This standard is being concurrently balloted for withdrawal. Please refer to Volume 01.09 for a complete copy of the standard.
