Currently, Note A4.3, Test Method for Mortar Aggregate Ratio, contains provisions on how to convert a mortar-aggregate ratio by weight (as determined by the test) into a ratio by volume (as that is the ratio specified by ASTM C270). This list includes Portland Cement at 94 pcf for bulk density as well as Blended Cement, Masonry Cement and Mortar Cement all with the bulk density listed as ‘Obtain from bag or supplier’. As the industry continues to evolve, an increasing number of hydraulic cements other than portland cement can be used in mortar. All of these cements will fall into the ‘Obtain from bag or supplier’ category and it is not practical to continue adding each new type of cement to the list in Note A4.3.
This ballot item proposes to simplify the list of materials in Note A4.3 to include portland cement (at 94 pcf for bulk density) and then just ‘Other Cements’ for which the bulk density will be shown as ‘Obtain from Bag or Supplier’. Separate lines for blended cement, masonry cement, and mortar cement will be removed.
