The proposed scope is to create a mandatory language document (Specification) for the industry that outlines both prescriptive and performance-based requirements for preventing aggregate reactions in concrete. This document will align with the guidance provided in ASTM C1778, aiming for adoption and reference in building codes and other mandatory language documents where current interpretations vary widely.
alkali aggregate reaction; alkali-silica reaction; alkali carbonate reaction; prescriptive requirements; performance requirements
Guide ASTM C1778 provides users with valuable guidance and approaches for reducing the risk of alkali aggregate reactions in concrete. Additionally, the document includes valuable supporting documentation and insights on the origins of its guidance. However, its non-mandatory language limits its adoption in other codes, specifications, or mandatory language documents. To facilitate the implementation of this information in concrete construction, a mandatory language document is necessary. This will help prevent misinterpretations that arise and are developed by Subcommittee C09.50.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
