Revision of D665-23 Standard Test Method for Rust-Preventing Characteristics of Inhibited Mineral Oil in the Presence of Water

Rationale

A new automated technique for digital rating of iron specimens has been developed. Based on a sophisticated digital vision technology this technique can offer an objective and unbiased alternative to the inherently difficult visual assessment referenced in section 13 of D665.
Since first introduction of the automatic digital rating technique in 2014, significant work and multiples ballots have been conducted on this issue. The most recent study performed in 2024 using 61 samples with different level of rusting demonstrated the ability of the automated algorithm to distinguish reddish-brown discoloration and showed good agreement with visual rater.
The data from that study was presented on D02.C0.02 section meeting in June 2024. On that meeting it was approved to start a new work item to revise Section 13 of the D665 method adding an automatic rating procedure as an alternative to the manual (visual) procedure that remains the referee. The description of automated technique will be added as an Annex A1. All other aspects of the method remain unchanged.
