This ballot is to remove language which is improperly referenced and not required. ASTM F1193-23 section #4 allows welding to be used by other international welding standards such as AWS, ASME, or equivalent. As identified in F1193-23 section 4.5.2.2 (4), “on a Welding Performance Qualification Record (WPQR)” is not the correct term or needs to be identified.
F2974 Task Group’s (TG) goal is to ensure we do not include terms from domestic standards since F1193 is an international standard. The following were TG’s thoughts on why we need to delete the term Welding Performance Qualification Record (WPQR).
• AWS A3.0 AWS A3.0 “Standard Welding Terms and Definitions” identifies WPQR as “a record of welding variables used to produce an acceptable test weldment and the results of the tests conducted on the weldment to qualify a welding procedure specification” and not for welder qualification as section 4.5.2.2 (4) is indicating.
• WPQR (Welding Procedure Qualification Record) often gets confused with welder performance qualification, as identified in F1193-23 section 4.5.2.2 (4).
• Other international standards like EN ISO 9606-2 do not use the term WPQR for welder qualifications
TG feels that since other international welding standards can be used with F1193, there is no need to reference the incorrect AWS term of WPQR as mentioned above.
