The developed pore segmentation method will be deployable on a wide range of X-ray computed tomography software packages alongside freeware to facilitate widespread adoption of the method.
A standard pore segmentation method will remove the reliance on commercial “black box” pore segmentation algorithms, such commercial algorithms are highly influenced by user defined settings, thus agreement of measurements between different users is challenging.
The method is targeted at X-ray CT data acquired from industrial X-ray computed tomography systems with an energy range from 225 kV to 450 kV, these being widely used for non-destructive testing.

Additively manufactured components may be contaminated by internal defects, such as porosity.
In order to check that a component is fit for service, it must be checked for porosity, non-destructively.
X-ray computed tomography can be used to measure porosity in additively manufactured components, non-destructively and can provide information on the size, shape, and location of pores in a component.
To measure the porosity of a sample using X-ray computed tomography requires a pore segmentation image processing algorithm.
Commercial pore segmentation algorithms have many user-defined settings, this leads to a high degree of user influence, thus a standard pore segmentation method is needed to minimise user influence and yield agreement of results between different end users.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
