Revision of C1884 Standard Specification for Manufactured Concrete Ballast Units
Rationale
In 2022, C1884-22 Specification for Concrete Ballast Block was combined with C1491-19 Specification for Concrete Roof Pavers to form a new C1884-23 Specification for Manufactured Concrete Ballast Units. Subsequently, C1491 was withdrawn as an active standard with a note referring users to see C1884.
The testing procedures for these two standards are contained in separate Annexes of C140 – Annex A6, Test Procedures for Concrete Roof Pavers for C1491 units, and Annex A9, Test Procedures for Concrete Ballast Block for C1884 units.
With the withdrawal of C1491, there is no need for the current Annex A6 on roof pavers. In another ballot item, it is being proposed to eliminate the current Annex A6 and to rename and move the annex for ballast units to a new Annex A6, Test Procedures for Manufactured Concrete Ballast Units.
The reason for moving and renaming the annex for ballast units to Annex A6 from Annex A9 is to maintain continuity in C140 and eliminate the ‘hole’ that would results if Annex A6 were simply removed. The subcommittee felt it made more logical sense to move Annex A9 (which is the last of the annexes) into the empty ‘A6’ slot, instead of having to renumber all of the annexes after A6.
The content of the new Annex A6 for ballast units will remain essentially the same as the current Annex A9 on ballast block except for the name change to reflect the change from ‘ballast block’ to ‘ballast unit’ and a note added to the scope of the annex to let users know that C1491 has been withdrawn and combined with C1884 and that the test methods for the historic C1491 specification can be found in historic editions of C140.
This ballot item proposes to change the reference in 7.2 to C140 Annex A6 instead of Annex A9.
As mentioned, besides this ballot item which changes the annex reference in C1884, there is a second item on C140 being balloted that actually moves the annex. Administrative negatives will be submitted for both items to keep them coordinated and assure that they both are published at the same time.
