This specification covers the requirements for segmental concrete paving slabs used for construction of
pedestal-set applications for commercial and municipal projects. These slabs can be manufactured with a
dry-cast, wet-cast, or hydraulically pressed process or some combination of these manufacturing processes such as in the
hermetically-pressed process.
NOTE 1—Pedestal-set applications typically are not subject to vehicular traffic. If the application will be subjected to vehicular traffic, it may require alternate materials properties or structural support or both.

This ballot item proposes the establishment of a new standard for Pedestal-Set Concrete Paving Slabs. Because
many of the criteria for these slabs (e.g., allowable raw materials, dimensional tolerance and freeze-thaw
durability criteria), are the same as for C1782 Segmental Concrete Paving Slabs, the C1782 specification is
being used as the model for this standard. This will help maintain consistency between the two standards. The
subcommittee determined that it is preferred to have a separate standard for pedestal-set slabs (instead of
incorporating it into the current C1782 specification) to facilitate the correct specification of the standards by
architects, engineers and specifiers. Note that this ballot item does NOT propose any modifications to C1782
itself. Rather, it provides context of what changes would be necessary to C1782, which if approved, would
become a new, separate standard for pedestal-set slabs.
While the whole proposed standard is open in this ballot, the ballot item shows the differences between the
proposed standard and the current C1782 specification to facilitate review by the voters.
Besides this ballot item establishing a new specification for pedestal-set slabs, a second item is being balloted to
add the test method to Test Methods C140 Annex A8. Administrative negatives will be put in for both items to
keep them coordinated and assure that they both are published at the same time.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
