For many years ASTM D910 has included D3341 Test Method for Lead in Gasoline—Iodine Monochloride Method as an option to determine the Tetra Ethyl Lead concentration in leaded Avgas grades. Recently this method has been withdrawn in favour of the more modern D5059 Test Method for Lead in Gasoline by X-Ray Spectroscopy technique. This has left D910 with only one option which is potentially challenging for some global regions. Inclusion of IP 270 is proposed to:
• Provide an alternative should a laboratory suffer failure of X-Ray instrumentation.
• Maintain alignment with Defence Standard 91-090 Avgas specifications Gasoline, Aviation, Grades UL91, 100/130 and 100/130 Low Lead.
IP methods are already referenced in D1655 Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels where appropriate.
A motion to ballot the above proposal was approved at the ASTM D02.J0-.02 Piston Engine Aviation Fuels meeting on June 28, 2023 in Denver, CO.
