While the current version of A961 allows retesting of mechanical properties, it does not address re-analysis of chemistry. Some labs may interpret that silence as meaning chemistry retesting is acceptable since it is not explicitly prohibited. Others may read the silence as not allowing chemistry to be retested at all. This ballot allows retesting of the chemistry, but with a limit on the number of retests, so a lab couldn't just retest until a passing result is obtained. The proposal to permit two re-analysis agrees with the number of tensile retests currently permitted by A961. There is precedence in allowing re-analysis for chemistry in A484/A484M-23 Standard Specification for General Requirements for Stainless Steel Bars, Billets, and Forgings, which allows two retests for any of the failing properties covered. This ballot allows retesting of the original sample because in the case of the heat analysis, no further sampling is possible after the heat is finished casting. It also establishes criteria for a replacement analysis for improper test procedure or equipment malfunction, just as AMS 2370 Quality Assurance Sampling and Testing Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel Wrought Products and Forging Stock does.
