Revision of D1298-12b(2017)e1 Standard Test Method for Density, Relative Density, or API Gravity of Crude Petroleum and Liquid Petroleum Products by Hydrometer Method
Rationale
The Terminology section is being updated with references to ASTM D4175 and API MPMS Ch 1 Terms and Definitions Database. Also, There is no previous ballot history, other than the comprehensive revision which resulted in the 2012 edition of the standard. This proposed ballot action is to allow the incorporation of standards on Liquid-in-Glass ASTM Thermometers with Low-Hazard Precision Liquids (E2251) and Digital Contact Thermometers (E2877) which had not completed development at the last revision to these standards. It will also address some issues and questions raised by users in the intervening period. Additionally for test sample temperature determination, which is critical for the determination of test density, there was no clear procedure as to how, where and when temperature was to be determined. This revision added procedures to do so, which was critical now that two additional temperature instruments have been added. Also Annex’s were added addressing fit-for-use, verification performance criteria and calibration criteria for the instruments used in this standard which were missing.
