The purpose of this guide, (along with TG807 “A standard practice for collecting representative samples of wire chops for chemical analysis”) is to ensure that scrap Copper granules are sampled and analyzed in a manner that produces, with the greatest reliability that is practical, specimens that are unbiased and representative of the chemistry of the entire shipment or lot being evaluated.
Melt; furnace; choppings
Because of the unique properties of Copper and Copper Alloys, existing methods of converting samples of granulated or fine material consisting of other metals (such as Electric Arc Furnace melting described in E1306) into solid pieces for further chemical analysis cannot be applied to Copper-bearing material. Furthermore, the melting of samples may introduce bias to otherwise representative and properly gathered samples as a result of LOI as well as preferential Oxidation of contaminants and alloying elements. This guideline, therefore, is intended to provide specifically for Copper-bearing materials.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
