New Test Method for Requalification of Type IV Composite Pressure Vessels Using Modal Acoustic Emission (MAE)

1. Scope

1.1 This test method provides guidelines for the AE (acoustic emission method) and MAE (modal acoustic emission technique) used for requalification of type IV composite pressure vessels of the type used for transport and storage of gas at high pressure.
1.2  This practice requires pressurization to a level greater than normal use. Pressurization medium may be gas or liquid.
1.3  This practice does not apply to vessels in cryogenic service.
1.4  The MAE measurements are used to detect and locate emission from Fiber Bundle Break.

Keywords

modal; acoustic; emission; gas; cylinders

Rationale

Due to the recent expansion and use of liquid natural gas and other products, the use of COPV cylinders are used to transport these types of products. The US DOT, and other companies that transport these types of products need a way to test the cylinders used in transport in lieu of visual testing and hydraulic proof pressure testing.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
