A recent ballot was successful in updating section 10 of E2260-21 Standard Guide for Repointing (Tuckpointing) Historic Masonry as part of an agreement to resolve the negative ballots on the 2020 proposed revisions of E2260-03. The following new clause 10.1 was added to the standard as a part of the ballot:
10.1 Applicability:
10.1.1 The procedures outlined in this section are only applicable for the use of repointing mortars meeting the requirements of ASTM C270.
10.1.2 The procedures outlined in this section may not be applicable for repointing mortars matching historic mortars, and meeting the requirements of ASTM C1713.
10.1.3 Mortars meeting the requirements of ASTM C1713 may be more appropriate for use based on the original historic mortar used to construct the masonry, or in other unique applications.
10.1.4 For guidance on procedures appropriate to mortars meeting the requirements of ASTM C1713, refer to the suppliers of the binder used in the particular mortar, or to relevant literature sources.
The addition of this clause limits the applicability of the standard to only those mortars complying with C270-19 Standard Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry and as a result limits the applicability of standard. The intent of this work item is to provide further updates to E2260-21a Standard Guide for Repointing (Tuckpointing) Historic Masonry that will include specific procedures for the repointing of historic masonry with mortars meeting the requirements of C1713-17 Standard Specification for Mortars for the Repair of Historic Masonry and C270. This will allow for the above clause to be removed in the future. In future updates to E2260, the mortars will grouped by application procedures to limit the complexity of the updates. The procedures currently included for C270 mortars are applicable and valid. Therefore, the Task Group will begin the updates by developing procedures for Natural Cement and Lime Mortars. Please contact the task group chair if you would like to be a part of those updates.
