This specification covers the requirements for treated water engine coolant mixtures (ready to use, prediluted) when used at 0% to 20% glycol concentration by volume in water for use in automobiles, light-duty, and heavy-duty service cooling systems. Without further dilution, they will function effectively to provide the cooling system protection against corrosion and boiling, but limited to no freezing protection.

ASTM D3306 and its included test methods are specific in communication and detail for the coolant type and test solution requirements. Though the physical and chemical requirements for concentrates and predilute are defined per D3306 technical literature, parties both informed and not are marketing non glycol engine coolants and those with glycol concentration outside of D3306 requirements as fully meeting the requirements of ASTM D3306 and D6210.
The target markets for such coolant products are tropical, subtropical, and arid climates where coolants of non glycol and limited freeze point (low glycol concentration by volume) populate the marketplace and where the average daily temperature does not fall below freezing. A new standard for these service regions and markets is required to maintain the credibility, distinction, and specificity of the ASTM D3306 and D6210 Standard Specifications and to support engine coolant selection and service where non glycol or limited freeze protection engine coolant is beneficial and preferred.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
