Evaluation of multiple methods for measurement of re-breathing, seeking consensus on reliable test methods.
SIDS; re-breathing; carbon dioxide; suffocation
Re-breathing carbon dioxide is a recognized fatal hazard to infants. Measurement of re-breathing is more complex than measurement of airflow or firmness, requiring a mechanical breathing model, carbon dioxide gas, and a carbon dioxide analyzer. Less complex methodologies have been published and may be an alternative to the CO2 + analyzer method. Measurements of airflow and firmness can help identify SOME hazardous materials and constructions, but measurement of re-breathing can identify out ALL hazardous products.
