Revision of A554-21 Standard Specification for Welded Stainless Steel Mechanical Tubing
Rationale
Discussion during the development of AISC 370, the structural design specification for stainless steel, it became clear that revision of the title and content of A554 is needed. Additionally, changes have been requested by manufacturers of the product. A554 tube is preferred for most structural tube applications but this is not reflected in the title and scope. The scope assumes that only cold reduced stainless steel is used, which is inaccurate. The revision will address those changes, add a cross reference to the laser and laser hybrid welded stainless steel standard (A1069) making welded corners permissible for tube produced to A1069 requirements. The revision will also include revisions to the maximum size of the tube made to this standard; permit the use of filler metal; add optional weld corrosion testing requirements; add tolerances specific to A1069 products and provide tighter tolerance options for standard A554 product. Additionally, the formatting will be reviewed.
