This standard identifies the chemical and physical properties of preformed thermoplastic pavement markings that are relevant for testing by manufacturers and governmental agencies using these products, including recommendations for the applicable testing methods and procedures to use. Additionally, this standard identifies those chemical and physical properties that some agencies have attempted to test or have included in their material specifications that are not relevant including the rationale as to why it is recommended that these properties not be tested.
Pavement Marking Materials; Thermoplastic Pavement Markings
Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Markings have been used for highway lane delineation for many years. Currently there is no uniform national material specification for this product nor uniform agreement among specifying agencies as to what properties should be evaluated to determine material compliance. Currently the primary approach taken by specifiers is to require that Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Markings meet the chemical and physical property requirements of the national standard for Hot Applied Thermoplastic Pavement Markings, AASHTO M249. In theory, this may seem appropriate but in practice this is not practical. In some cases the property being specified in AASHTO M249 is not applicable because of the form in which the product is manufactured and sold or the difference in the product's application method. Additionally, the test method for some properties in M249 and relevant to Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Markings is not applicable for Preformed Thermoplastic as currently written but require some modifications in order to be used legitimately. This standard provides the user guidance as to which chemical and physical properties are relevant for testing of Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Markings with recommendations for the appropriate test method with any needed modifications of those methods and those properties which are not relevant with the rationale for why.
