This work item proposes revisions to Practice C1740 based on recent research that has increased our understanding of the impulse-response method when applied to plate-like structures. The proposed revisions include the following: 1) Updating the terminology section; 2) Revising the equation for determining the frequency response function so that it can be implemented with current computational software and allow for acceleration as well as velocity response functions; 3) Updating the figures to show responses for different conditions; 4) Providing more guidance on judging the validity of the recorded signals at each test point and mention the use of the coherence function as an indicator of signal quality; 5) Allowing for a wider frequency range than the current range of 0 to 800 Hz in the response function; and 6) Updating the Appendix to include knowledge gained from recent research and adding recent references.
