New Test Methods for Determination of CO2 in Cements and Concretes

1. Scope

Standardize measurement procedures for measuring CO2 directly or indirectly in cements and concretes. Initial methods to be standardized are combustion analysis (method A) and titration for carbonate (method B). Other methods may be considered as time and resources allow. Both hydraulic and non-hydraulic cements will be considered.

Keywords

Carbon; Carbon Dioxide; Mineralization; sequestration

Rationale

There are ongoing initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial processes either by modification of the process and raw materials or direct capture from process emissions and to sequester captured CO2 by mineralization in cement and concrete. There are also accounting systems to track CO2 emissions and reductions from corporate entities and from the manufacture of a product which are being developed and may be used to allocate carbon taxes and credits. (For example, see Work Item 51149 (CEN/TC51) and Work Item 229188 (CEN/TC229) regarding Environmental Product Declarations for cements and precast concrete products.) Hence, there is a need to measure CO2 in cements and concretes by standardized methodologies for input into CO2 declarations or tax/credit systems or possibly to guide product manufacturing.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
