1.1.This Guide covers the procedure for determination physical, chemical and performance properties of hydrocarbon fuels, hydraulic fluids, and lubricants. 1.1.1.Physical Properties: API gravity, density at 15 C, cloud point, flash point, freeze point, viscosity at 40oC and -20C, C distillation at 10, 50, 90 and 100 volume % recovered, Reid vapor pressure. 1.1.2.Chemical Properties: volume % of aromatics, saturates, ethanol, methyl tertiary-butyl ether, benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, xylenes, and fuel system icing inhibitor, mass % hydrogen. 1.1.3.Performance Properties: cetane index, anti-knock index, motor octane number, research octane number. 1.2.The hydrocarbons being tested by this Standard Guide can include: jet fuel, diesel fuel, gasoline, hydraulic fluids, and lubricants. 1.3.The primary instrumentation applied in this is Guide are Mid-infrared (MIR), Near-Infrared (NIR) and Raman spectrometers (Raman). 1.4.This Standard is designed to employ the application of Chemometrics to predict hydrocarbon property values of unknown samples within the types used to develop the multivariate statistical models. 1.5.Synthetic components effects [are we going to add examples?] 1.6.SI units of measurement are preferred and used throughout this standard. 1.7.This Standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Jet Fuel, Chemometrics, NIR, FTIR
There has been shown that many physical properties can be predicted from the Spectrum of a Jet fuel. The cost and time saving of this approach of property determination is extensive. The tools to develop these Models are known, but the sequence and flow of this objective can be challenging to setup. The Standard is designed to help lead the user through this process.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
