Develop practices and voluntary standards that can be implemented to create a more environmentally responsible meeting or event. The ASTM standards will focus on the things that meeting planners do to plan a meeting and to bring the meeting to fruition, and will include areas such as food and beverage, on-site execution, communication and marketing, transportation, etc. The vision is to create a set of best standards that will help planners and suppliers alike navigate the sometime confusing process of making meeting and events green. This particular task group will work on the specific area of accommodations. The scope will focus on rooms and accommodations provided at hotels or similar facilities.
Meeting accommodations, rooms, hotels, conference centers
There is tremendous interest in green meetings, however, without standards meeting planners and suppliers (hotels, A/V companies, catering companies, transportation companies) are challenged to design and implement more sustainable meetings. In the marketplace, there are a range of approaches or attempts to codify what constitutes a green meeting. As the umbrella organization representing thirty-four organizations, the Convention Industry Council (CIC) and its members realized the value of creating one standard that all industry participants agree upon. Because CIC doesnt represent just one constituency in the meeting industry, and in fact includes on its board representatives from every member organization, it truly serves as the voice of the industry without competition. It therefore is in a unique position to drive the development of industry standards without concern for gaining an unfair advantage over another group. The ASTM process offers CIC value in establishing an internationally recognized standard. The standards will be voluntary and will likely be adopted by a vast array of parties involved in planning meetings, conferences, events, and trade shows including but not limited to meeting planners, conference service managers, catering personnel, hotel staff, convention center staff, conference center staff, audio/visual companies, trade show managers, and trade show exhibit managers.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
