1.SCOPE 1.1This fire-test response method contains a series of small-scale test methods for assessing the fire-test-response characteristics of components and composites of upholstered furniture using flaming ignition sources, for the materials and systems described in 1.2 and 1.3. 1.2This fire-test-response method contains methods for assessing the fire-test-response characteristics of the following materials to flaming ignition sources: upholstery cover materials (see 3.2.3), upholstery materials (or foams or resilient cellular filling materials, see 3.2.8), dust cover materials (see 3.2.1), fiber filling materials and loose filling materials. 1.3This fire-test-response method also contains a fire test method for assessing the fire-test-response characteristics of overall upholstered furniture mockup composites to flaming ignition sources. 1.4This test method does not contain a full scale test method on upholstered furniture items. 1.5Use the SI system of units in referee decisions; see ASTM SI-10. The units given in parentheses are for information only. 1.6This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire-hazard or fire-risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. 1.7This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. (For specific hazards see section 8). 1.8Fire testing is inherently hazardous. Adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests.
